World upheaval in the sphere of human rights compels us to deepen our understanding of social equality. This begins with the dynamic challenges and discoveries of the relationship of the “I am with the Other”. It continues to develop within relationships formed in endeavors where the I and the Other recognize and confront the needs of the world.

We will explore the urgent questions of rights and responsibilities, turning to the specific
phenomenon of the international surge of refugees and displaced peoples. We will reflect on the impact of this crisis on our own life and destiny, seeking ways to be part of the healing in partnership with others who are working to create new forms for the protection and nourishment of human rights.

Such a vast panorama! but ultimately, as we may discover, a truly personal one.

About the Contributor: Carrie Schuchardt (M.ED.) has lived and worked with refugees since 1980, first during her years as a long-term life-sharer at Camphill Village ( Kimberton PA) and then as co-founder and director of the House of Peace (Ipswich MA). In 1990, together with her husband John, Carrie established this small therapeutic community where refugees uprooted by war receive physical shelter and spiritual refuge in companionship with adults with special needs who are at the core of the hospitality offered by the House of Peace. Carrie is connected with a wide range of refugee resettlement efforts and with advocacy for the rights of people with special needs and abilities. She has participated in many international human rights and peace delegations.
